Rachel Howard and John Copeland at Newport Street Gallery
For the first time, Newport Street Gallery is pleased to present two solo exhibitions running simultaneously. Repetition is Truth – Via Dolorosa by Rachel Howard and Your Heaven Looks Just Like My Hell by John Copeland opened to the public today and will run until 28th May 2018.
Occupying the ground floor galleries, Repetition is Truth – Via Dolorosa was commissioned by the Murderme collection and produced between 2005 and 2008. The series of fifteen paintings by British artist Rachel Howard takes inspiration from the Stations of the Cross, 'Via Dolorosa'. Referencing the tradition of depicting the Stations, 'Repetition is Truth' also offers a broader commentary on the universality of human rights abuses.
The first floor of Newport Street Gallery will feature the first UK solo exhibition of American artist John Copeland, with twenty-five paintings dating from 2009 to 2017, also taken from the Murderme collection. Copeland's use of familiar motifs – the nude, the table and the skull – allow him to explore the complications inherent to image-making and representation.
